Safety Manager

The Nickel and Zinc (NiZn) Safety Manager will contribute to the development of NiZn Safety management systems and improvement of global Safety performance. The role will support the implementation and ongoing evolution of Glencore’s Health, Safety, Environment, Communities & Human Rights (HSEC&HR) strategy, including SafeWork, the associated Safety technical standards and guidance, and safety strategic projects in alignment with Glencore’s Health and Safety Policy. In this position, travel to sites will apply of around approximately 40% of time.

This role reports to the NiZn Department HSEC and HR Lead.

The main tasks and responsibilities

  • Contribute to the implementation and evolution of Glencore’s Health, Safety, Environment, Communities & Human Rights (HSEC&HR) strategy including SafeWork, Fatal Hazard Protocols, and associated safety Technical Standards and guidance within the NiZn Department
  • Support global continuous improvement through contributing to the design of systems and processes to monitor, assure and report on Safety performance
  • Deliver technical support to the NiZn assets in the areas of Safety and Group-wide Safety management system
  • Support the development and implementation of assurance processes for Glencore’s safety management, as required
  • Support data management and ensure timely and accurate delivery of any required information for internal and external reporting, including the Annual Report, Annual Sustainability Report, and ICMM-required reporting
  • Support monitoring and trends analysis of safety Incidents data reported by the NiZn business units
  • Provide support and group-level monitoring of performance related to safety objectives, targets, and metrics
  • Promote a proactive approach to the management of safety with Glencore’s Corporate HSEC & Human Rights and Sustainability Group, Departmental and Regional HSEC Leads, and other relevant internal stakeholders, to encourage leveraging of best practices across the business
  • Provide coordination of group safety projects, training programmes and workshops to assist in the implementation of technical standards across the business
  • The candidate is available to travel to sites estimated 40 % travel

Our ideal person

  • An experienced professional with effective persuasion and decision-making capability
  • Experience/knowledge of the following areas will be beneficial, UG and OC mining, concentrators, hydrometallurgical and pyrometallurgical process plants
  • Eperience in risk management, catastrophic hazard management, occupational safety, fatal hazard protocol management and process safety management
  • A high level of personal credibility, with the authority to build respect and trust at all levels of a company
  • Composed, professional and collaborative. Comfortable “rolling up the sleeves” with a “can do” approach
  • A genuine interest in building and sustaining positive relationships with key internal and external stakeholders
  • Demonstrated ability to navigate complexity and act strategically, as well as being flexible and adaptable to fast changing priorities
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills and advanced analytical and creative problem-solving capability
  • The candidate should be able to show to proven safety results and be able clearly showcase how to contribute towards future safety improvements

Minimum requirements

  • Degree Qualified (Health and Safety discipline, or other qualification with relevant experience) and relevant in-field experience (>8 years)
  • Understanding, experience and knowledge in safety management issues, governance, and performance within a global multinational setting
  • Experience with global operations and international standards such as, ISO19001, ISO 450001, ISO31000, UN Sustainable Development Goals and GRI Standards
  • Experience and knowledge in projects management
  • Experience planning and implementing assurance activities
  • Extensive experience in the implementation of SafeWork and Glencore Fatal hazard Protocols viewed favourably
  • Significant experience working in the extractives industry
  • Fluency in English, with proficiency in French or Russian preferred
