ICT-System-Engineer

The Department of Chemistry at the University of Zurich consists of more than 20 research groups and comprises approximately 300 employees and students who are actively engaged in research and teaching in the fields of life sciences, energy research, and other chemistry areas.

In your new role, you will maintain communication and contact with the institute's staff, researchers, and students, and - in close collaboration with the University of Zurich's Central IT Department - ensure the optimal operation of the institute's IT infrastructure and provide on-site user support.

Your responsibilities

• Administration, maintenance, and 1st and 2nd-level support for the local, institute-specific IT infrastructure, such as servers and workstations running Windows, macOS, and Linux systems
• Setting up, monitoring, and ensuring data backups for servers, laboratory and instrument PCs, and selected workstation systems
• User support for software solutions used at the institute
• Providing support and guidance to users on how to use IT tools and on IT security issues
• Participation in and coordination of small IT projects in collaboration with the Central IT Department
• Automating and simplifying routine support tasks
• Partnering with research groups on scientific IT topics such as cloud-based infrastructure, AI-assisted research workflows, and, potentially, support for computational chemistry applications

Beyond day-to-day 1st- and 2nd-level support, we see real potential for this role to grow: for a motivated person with the right technical curiosity, there is scope to streamline routine support through smarter workflows, and to become a bridge between IT and research, from cloud infrastructure to exploring how AI tools can support daily scientific work and the department's broader digital chemistry ambitions.

Your profile

• Education in computer science (at least at the level of an EFZ computer science apprenticeship, specializing in platform development)
• A degree in computer science from a vocational college is an asset
• Several years of experience as a systems engineer is desired
• In-depth knowledge of Microsoft Windows, Apple macOS, and Linux systems (client and server)
• The ability, interest, and commitment to familiarize yourself with the specific needs of individual research groups and users
• Enjoyment of direct contact with users, as well as a strong customer and service orientation
• A structured, solution-oriented, and independent work ethic
• A responsible, communicative, and team-oriented person
• Excellent written and spoken English skills (at least C1), German is a big plus
